Description

The Stow is a 450mm lantern-style outdoor wall light with an old bronze finish, seeded glass panes, and a hinged door that opens for bulb changes. The metal frame replicates the proportions of gas lanterns from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with a tapering chimney top, ventilation piercing below the cap, and a single E14 candle bulb visible through the seeded glass panels.

Designed for front doors, porches, covered patios and garden walls, the Stow carries an IP44 rating for protection against solid objects larger than 1mm and water splashing from any direction. This makes it suitable for covered outdoor positions where the fitting is not directly exposed to heavy rain or hose-down cleaning. The 110mm projection from the wall and 112mm width give the lantern enough presence to work on brick or rendered elevations without overwhelming narrow doorways.

The old bronze finish is applied over a die-cast metal body and develops a darker patina in the recesses and joints, giving the appearance of aged metalwork. The seeded glass has an irregular texture pressed into both faces, which diffuses the light from the candle bulb and softens the glow when viewed from the side. The hinged door on the front panel swings open on a brass-bushed hinge, allowing the E14 bulb to be replaced without removing the entire fitting from the wall.

The Stow is part of the Elstead Lighting traditional outdoor range and pairs well with properties built or renovated in period styles where modern LED downlights would look out of place. The 60W maximum rating supports both traditional incandescent candle bulbs and modern LED equivalents in E14 small Edison screw format, giving flexibility over light output and colour temperature depending on the position and task.

Frequently Asked

What does IP44 mean for outdoor use?

IP44 provides protection against solid objects larger than 1mm and water splashing from any direction. The Stow is suitable for covered outdoor positions such as porches, covered patios and recessed doorways where the fitting is sheltered from direct heavy rain. It is not rated for fully exposed positions or areas subject to hose-down cleaning.

How is the bulb changed?

The front glass panel is mounted on a hinged door that swings open on a brass-bushed hinge. Unclip the latch on the side of the frame and swing the door open to access the E14 bulb socket. The bulb can then be replaced without removing the wall plate or disconnecting any wiring.

What bulb should I use?

The fitting takes a standard E14 small Edison screw bulb up to 60W. Most users choose a 4-6W LED candle bulb in warm white (2700K-3000K) for a soft ambient glow that suits the traditional lantern style. Clear or flame-effect candle bulbs work well behind the seeded glass.

Can it be mounted on brick or render?

Yes. The wall plate has fixing points for standard masonry plugs and screws. The 110mm projection and 112mm width give enough clearance from the wall surface for the lantern body to sit plumb on most brick or rendered elevations without fouling on uneven mortar joints.
