Description

The St James is a traditional outdoor wall lantern built from solid brass with an aged brass finish, clear bevelled glass panels and a single E27 lampholder inside. The lantern body measures approximately 230mm high by 180mm wide, with a domed top and stepped base moulding that references pre-Georgian and Victorian coach light designs. The aged brass finish is lacquered to protect the patina and slow natural weathering.

Designed for mounting beside front doors, on porch walls and flanking garage entrances, the St James carries an IP44 rating for protection against moisture and dust, making it suitable for exposed outdoor positions under eaves or canopies. The lantern takes any standard E27 bulb up to 60W (sold separately), with most users pairing it with a warm-white LED filament bulb between 4-6W to mimic traditional gas lamp appearance. The clear glass allows full light distribution while the brass framework casts subtle shadows on adjacent brickwork.

Each lantern is hand-assembled and hand-finished by Elstead Lighting, a British manufacturer specialising in traditional outdoor and period lighting. The solid brass construction gives the fitting a substantial weight of approximately 1.2kg, and the aged finish develops further patina over time when exposed to weather, deepening the bronze tones naturally. The bevelled glass panels are sealed with brass-framed gaskets to maintain the IP44 weatherproofing while allowing the glass to be cleaned from outside without dismantling the lantern body.

What does IP44 mean for outdoor use?

IP44 provides protection against solid objects larger than 1mm (dust and insects) and water splashing from any direction. This rating is suitable for outdoor positions under eaves, canopies or porch overhangs where the lantern has some shelter from direct rainfall. It is not rated for fully exposed positions with no overhead cover.

What bulb should I use?

The lantern takes a standard E27 bulb up to 60W. For a period-appropriate warm glow that mimics gas lamp light, use a warm-white LED filament bulb between 4-6W at 2200K-2700K colour temperature. Clear glass filament bulbs work particularly well with the bevelled glass panels.

Will the brass finish change over time?

Yes. The aged brass finish is lacquered to slow weathering, but natural patina development will continue over months and years when exposed to outdoor conditions. The bronze tones deepen and the brass darkens slightly, which is characteristic of solid brass outdoor fittings and considered desirable in traditional lighting.

How is the lantern mounted?

The lantern mounts via a back plate with two fixing points for screws into a brick, stone or rendered exterior wall. The electrical cable feeds through a central knockout hole in the back plate. A qualified electrician should install the fitting to ensure correct IP-rated cable glands and weatherproof termination.
