Description
This white stoneware mug is printed with the Spitfire, drawn twice on the front in its camouflage of green and sandy brown: once from above, wings spread wide with their red, white and blue roundels, and once side on, showing the fuselage codes KL and B either side of a roundel. Turn the mug round and the back carries the aircraft's own fact file under a bold SPITFIRE heading, set out in neat panels: a crew of one, first flight on 5 March 1936, introduced in 1938, last mission on 1 April 1954, a wingspan of 11.22 to 11.23 metres and top speeds of 360mph for the Mk I and 408mph for the Mk IX. The handle and the inside are a deep green, which picks up the green of the camouflage against the white glaze.
We think it makes a thoughtful Father's Day gift for dads who love aviation, history or simply a good cup of tea in the morning. It is just as at home on a desk at work, beside the newspaper at the kitchen table or on the shelf in a study, where the fact file gives a talking point every time someone picks it up. For a dad who still stops to look up when a vintage plane passes overhead, it is an everyday piece he will reach for again and again.
The mug is made from stoneware, a type of ceramic, with a glazed finish over the printed design. It stands 9.8cm tall and measures 8.5cm deep, a familiar everyday size for tea, coffee or hot chocolate. To keep the print looking its best, we suggest washing it gently by hand in warm soapy water and drying it with a soft cloth. Wrap it with a packet of his favourite tea or coffee, or a book about wartime aircraft, for a Father's Day gift that feels properly considered.
