Description

This sitting squirrel figurine shows a squirrel paused on its haunches, both front paws drawn up to its chest and a great bushy tail curving high behind its back. It is made from resin, the material also known as polystone, and finished in a warm russet brown with a cream-white chest and belly, soft pink inside the ears and dark, glossy eyes. The fur is picked out in fine detail all over, from the tufted tips of the ears to the long sweeping strands of the tail. It stands 22.5cm tall, 21cm wide and 12cm deep, a generous size that holds its own on a shelf without crowding it.

With a depth of just 12cm it sits comfortably on a mantelpiece, a bookcase shelf, a deep windowsill or a hall table. Its head is turned a little to one side, so it looks especially natural at the end of a shelf, gazing out across the room. We like it in a sitting room among natural textures such as wood, wicker and linen, or on a kitchen dresser beside plants and earthenware jugs. In a study or a reading corner it brings a quiet touch of woodland life, tucked among a row of favourite books.

The figure rests on its back feet and the base of its tail, so it stands on its own and needs no stand or fixing. Resin takes fine surface detail well, which is why the fur, claws and soft muzzle read so clearly up close. To keep it looking its best, dust it now and then with a soft dry cloth, or wipe it gently with a damp cloth and let it dry. Set it slightly off centre on a mantelpiece, angled so the full curve of the tail shows, and it will catch the eye of everyone who comes into the room. It also makes a cheerful, easy gift to wrap.
