Description

A blanking plate does one quiet job: it closes off a single unused position on the wall so nothing is left open to view. This one wears a plum finish, a deep purple that sits somewhere between aubergine and berry depending on the light in the room, and the screwless plate style leaves the front face clean and unbroken. The proportions are the standard single square, 88mm across, with a shallow profile that keeps it close to the wall. We keep it in stock as a small part that tidies up a job properly.

It earns its place wherever a position has been decommissioned or held in reserve: an old television point that has moved, a spare position left ready for a future data outlet, or a redundant socket removed during a refit. In rented flats and let properties it keeps an awkward gap from being left behind; at home it stops a bare aperture drawing the eye along a run of switches and sockets. We would choose plum where the walls or the other plates already carry a strong colour, since a white plate in that setting tends to shout.

The plate is moulded in ABS, a hard-wearing plastic that holds its colour and takes the odd knock from furniture or a vacuum head without marking. Keeping it clean asks very little: wipe the face with a damp cloth, dry it off, and steer clear of kitchen sprays and cream cleaners, which dull coloured plastic over time. Indoor rooms are its place; leave it out of anything damp or exposed. It carries a ten year warranty. The real appeal is that it disappears: once it is on the wall the eye passes straight over it, which is exactly what you want from a plate with nothing on it.

Frequently Asked

What size is the plate?

It is a single square plate, 88mm by 88mm, on the standard one gang footprint, with a shallow 25mm depth behind the face.

What is it made from?

Moulded ABS, a rigid plastic chosen for coloured plates because it stays hard-wearing and keeps its tone in daily use.

Is there anything live or switchable on it?

No. It is a blank cover with no switch, no module and nothing to operate; it simply closes off a single position.

How do I clean a coloured plate without spoiling the finish?

A damp cloth and a dry buff is all it needs. Avoid solvents, bleach sprays and abrasive cream cleaners, which can leave coloured plastic looking flat and patchy.

Can it be used in a bathroom or outdoors?

It is rated for indoor use only, so keep it to dry rooms rather than shower zones, conservatory eaves or anywhere it might be rained on.

What colour is plum, exactly?

A deep purple with a warm, wine-like cast, darker than lilac and reading almost aubergine in low light.
