Description
The Sheldon is a 295mm outdoor chain pendant with a verdigris-finish brass shade and clear glass dome, designed around early 1900s barn lamp proportions. The shade is spun from solid brass and finished in a weathered blue-green verdigris patina that mimics natural copper oxidation, set above a clear glass cylinder housing a single E27 bulb. The IP44 rating allows installation on covered porches, terraces, and under eaves where the fitting is protected from direct water jets.
Suspended on a brass chain with an adjustable drop of 330-950mm on installation, the Sheldon suits front porches, covered rear terraces, outdoor dining areas under pergolas, and entrance canopies. The chain and ceiling rose are finished in matching verdigris, and the cable runs concealed inside the chain links. The clear glass dome allows full light output downwards and outwards, while the metal shade directs some reflection back up onto the ceiling or canopy overhead.
Handcrafted from solid brass rather than plated steel, the verdigris finish develops further patina over time as the lacquer weathers and the brass beneath oxidises naturally. This gradual colour shift from pale verdigris to deeper teal-green tones is a feature of the material rather than a defect. The 295mm diameter and 255mm shade height give the Sheldon a noticeable presence without overwhelming smaller porch areas. An optional glass guard cage accessory (sold separately) can be fitted around the bulb for a more industrial profile.
The fitting is rated for E27 bulbs up to 60W and ships with Elstead's lifetime guarantee, covering material and workmanship defects for the lifetime of the original purchaser. Bulbs are sold separately.

Frequently Asked
What does IP44 mean for outdoor use?
IP44 indicates protection against solid objects larger than 1mm and splashing water from any direction. The Sheldon can be installed on covered porches, under eaves, and beneath canopies, but should not be exposed to direct rain or water jets. It is not rated for fully exposed outdoor positions.
Will the verdigris finish change over time?
Yes. The verdigris lacquer weathers gradually and the solid brass beneath oxidises naturally, developing deeper teal-green tones and further patina variation. This is a feature of the natural material and finish, not a defect. The rate of change depends on exposure to moisture and air.
What bulb should I use?
The Sheldon takes any standard E27 bulb up to 60W. For outdoor porch lighting, most users choose a warm-white LED between 6-10W and 2700K for a warm glow that complements the verdigris finish. Filament-style decorative bulbs work well in this clear glass dome.
Can the chain length be shortened?
Yes. The 590mm chain can be adjusted during installation by removing links to achieve the desired drop between the minimum 330mm and maximum 950mm. Once installed, the drop is fixed unless the fitting is taken down and reinstalled.
