Description
This running horse figurine is made of resin and finished to look as though it has been pieced together from weathered driftwood. The horse is caught mid-stride, head up and legs reaching, with a mane and tail of branch-like strands that sweep back as if in the wind. Its body is built from overlapping slivers that imitate old timber, each with its own grain and knots, while the slender legs are shaped like smooth twigs. The colour is a warm, natural brown. It stands 21cm high, measures 31cm from nose to tail and is 7.5cm across, so it has real presence without taking over a shelf.
Being resin, it gives you the driftwood look without the loose bark of the real thing, and it stands on its own four hooves, so it needs no stand or fixing. We like it on a mantelpiece, a bookcase or a deep windowsill, where light falling across the textured surface brings out every ridge. It sits as happily in a country cottage with beams and wooden furniture as in a pared-back modern room that needs something natural to soften it. In a hallway or on a sideboard it gives visitors something to look at closely, and a coastal room, where driftwood already feels at home, suits it well too.
The surface is deeply textured, with ridges, grooves and knots running across the body and down every leg. To keep it looking its best, dust it now and then with a soft dry brush or cloth, working into the grooves, and wipe it with a slightly damp cloth if it needs more. Set it side-on along a shelf so the full stride and flowing tail can be seen, or turn it slightly towards the room so the head catches the eye. It also makes a thoughtful gift.
