Description

The Roots is a 30cm pendant light built from laser-cut 5-layer beech plywood curved into a tapered dome, suspended on a black fabric cable from a black metal canopy. The plywood slats are spaced 8-10mm apart, creating vertical shadow lines when the bulb is lit, and the natural beech tone warms under incandescent or warm-white LED. A single E27 bulb (sold separately) sits inside the shade, with light escaping through the slat gaps and the open base.

Designed as part of Maytoni's Modern Nature collection, the Roots suits dining tables, kitchen islands, hallways and home offices where a single pendant can act as both task and ambient light. The 347.5cm maximum drop allows the pendant to be installed on high ceilings and shortened to 57.5cm minimum for standard 2.4m ceiling heights, typically positioning the shade 700-900mm above a worktop or dining surface. The black fabric cable conceals the electrical run and the metal canopy fits standard UK ceiling roses.

Each shade is made from 5-layer cross-laminated beech plywood, lacquer-finished to resist moisture and retain the wood's natural colour over time. The vertical slat construction means the shade weighs less than a solid wood equivalent while maintaining structural rigidity. The tapered profile (30cm diameter at the widest point, narrowing at top and base) gives the pendant a geometric form that pairs well with Scandinavian, mid-century and contemporary interiors. The black metal fittings provide contrast against the warm beech tone without dominating the overall design.

The Roots takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 40W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED bulb (2700K-3000K) at 6-10W for dining or kitchen use, or a decorative filament bulb for visible-bulb aesthetics.

Can the drop height be adjusted?

Yes. The black fabric cable allows the pendant to hang at any height between 57.5cm and 347.5cm from the ceiling. Adjustment is made during installation by looping excess cable inside the ceiling canopy.

Is the wooden shade treated or sealed?

Yes. The 5-layer beech plywood is lacquer-finished to resist moisture and maintain the wood's natural colour. The shade is rated IP20, suitable for dry indoor use only — not for bathrooms, outdoor areas or kitchens directly above hobs where steam exposure is frequent.

Can multiple Roots pendants be hung together?

Yes. The Roots works well in clusters of 2-3 over a kitchen island or dining table, spaced 600-800mm apart. Each pendant requires its own ceiling rose and wiring point.
