Roots 20cm Wooden Pendant Light - Natural Beech Slat Shade

The Roots is a 20cm diameter pendant light with a sculptural shade assembled from curved beech plywood slats, suspended from a matt black metal canopy on a fabric-covered adjustable cable. The shade is constructed from 5-layer plywood bent into vertical ribs that form an hourglass profile, widening at the base and narrowing at the neck where the E27 lampholder sits. The natural beech finish is lacquered to protect the wood while retaining its pale honey tone and visible grain.

Designed for kitchens, dining areas, hallways and bedroom reading positions, the Roots works as a single pendant over a breakfast bar or in clusters of two or three above a dining table. The adjustable cable extends from 39.5cm to 329.5cm, allowing the pendant to be set at the appropriate drop for ceiling heights between 2.4m and 3.5m. The slat construction allows light from the central E27 bulb to escape through the gaps, casting diffused ambient light downwards while projecting a slatted shadow pattern onto surrounding surfaces.

The beech plywood slats are die-cut and assembled into the hourglass form, then lacquered to seal the wood against dust accumulation. The matt black canopy and cable provide tonal contrast against the pale wood, while the exposed E27 bulb inside the shade means a vintage-style filament bulb (sold separately) adds decorative detail when the light is switched off. The IP20 rating restricts the Roots to dry indoor use only — bathrooms, kitchens near sinks and outdoor covered areas are not suitable.

What bulb does the Roots take?

The Roots takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 40W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED filament bulb between 4-8W and 2700K for ambient light, or a vintage-style squirrel-cage filament bulb for decorative effect when the light is off.

Can the drop height be adjusted after installation?

Yes. The fabric-covered cable is adjustable between 39.5cm and 329.5cm during installation. The cable is typically trimmed and fixed at the desired length when the pendant is first fitted, though it can be re-adjusted if ceiling height requirements change.

Is the wooden shade suitable for bathrooms or kitchens?

The IP20 rating means the Roots is suitable only for dry indoor areas. Bathrooms, shower rooms, and kitchen positions directly above sinks or cooktops where steam and moisture are present are not appropriate. A standard kitchen dining area or breakfast bar away from the sink is acceptable.

How is the wooden shade cleaned?

Wipe the lacquered beech slats with a dry microfibre cloth. For stubborn marks, a barely-damp cloth is acceptable, but avoid soaking the wood or using household sprays that can damage the lacquer finish.
