Description

The QTX 3.5mm stereo jack plug is a solder-type connector with a black metal body, gold-plated contacts and a threaded housing that accepts cables up to 6mm diameter. The plug provides a tip, ring and sleeve connection for stereo audio signals, commonly used to terminate headphone cables, auxiliary audio leads and patch cables for mixers, amplifiers and consumer electronics.

Designed for DIY cable assembly and repair work, the threaded housing unscrews to expose the internal contacts for soldering. Once the cable is soldered to the tip (left channel), ring (right channel) and sleeve (ground) contacts, the housing threads back over the cable and contact assembly, providing strain relief at the point where the cable enters the plug. The 6mm cable entry accommodates most standard audio cable outer diameters including shielded twin-core and multi-strand speaker wire.

The black metal body is lightweight at 10g and measures 46mm from tip to cable entry, with a 12mm diameter housing that fits standard 3.5mm jack sockets. The gold-plated contacts resist oxidation and maintain conductivity over repeated insertion cycles. This is a passive connector with no active components — signal quality depends on the cable used and the quality of the solder joints made during assembly.

Frequently Asked

What tools are needed to fit this plug?

You will need a soldering iron (25-40W recommended), solder (rosin-core electronics solder), wire strippers, and a small pair of pliers or a bench vice to hold the plug steady while soldering. A multimeter is useful for checking continuity after assembly.

What cable diameter does it accept?

The threaded housing accepts cables up to 6mm outer diameter. This covers most standard headphone cables, aux leads and shielded audio cables. Thicker cables will not fit through the strain relief housing.

Are the contacts pre-tinned?

No. The gold-plated contacts are not pre-tinned. You will need to tin both the cable ends and the plug contacts with solder before making the final joint to ensure a reliable electrical connection.

Can this be used for mono signals?

Yes. For mono use, solder the signal wire to the tip contact and the ground to the sleeve, leaving the ring contact unconnected. This configuration is common for mono instrument cables and microphone leads using 3.5mm jacks.
