Description

The Polar is an 8.2cm diameter surface-mounted downlight in white aluminium with a GX53 bulb base rated to 15W. Surface mounting means the fitting sits directly on the ceiling surface rather than requiring a recessed void, making it suitable for installations where ceiling depth is insufficient for a recessed downlight or where plasterboard and joist configuration prevents cutting apertures.

Designed for general illumination in kitchens, hallways, bathrooms (within IP20 zones), utility rooms and contemporary living spaces, the Polar provides downward-directed light from a compact 8.5cm-high cylinder. The white finish blends with white or light-coloured ceilings, reducing visual intrusion in rooms where the ceiling line is uninterrupted. The GX53 base accepts standard GX53 LED bulbs (sold separately), which are typically lower-profile than E27 or GU10 fittings and offer warm-white to cool-white options between 2700K and 4000K.

The aluminium body dissipates heat effectively and provides structural rigidity, while the plastic diffuser softens the light output and reduces glare when the fitting is viewed from an angle. The 220-240V AC input suits UK mains voltage without requiring a transformer. Installation involves fixing the base plate to the ceiling with two screws, connecting to the mains cable via a junction box or ceiling rose, then clipping the cylindrical cover into place.

The Polar uses a GX53 base bulb up to 15W. GX53 bulbs are sold separately and are typically LED format with a lower profile than E27 or GU10 fittings. Most users pair this with a warm-white or neutral-white LED between 6-12W and 2700K-4000K.

Can it be used in bathrooms?

The IP20 rating means the Polar is suitable only for Zone 3 or outside zones in UK bathroom installations — typically areas more than 60cm from a bath or shower cubicle and not directly above them. It cannot be used in Zones 0, 1 or 2 where higher IP ratings are required.

Why surface-mounted rather than recessed?

Surface mounting is used where ceiling depth is insufficient for a recessed downlight, where joists or services prevent cutting ceiling apertures, or where the ceiling construction (concrete, suspended panels) does not allow recessed fittings. The Polar sits on the ceiling surface and requires only a fixing point and mains connection.

Is it dimmable?

Dimming depends on the bulb fitted. GX53 LED bulbs are available in both dimmable and non-dimmable versions. Check the bulb specification and pair with a compatible trailing-edge LED dimmer if dimming is required.
