Description

The Planet is a 10cm diameter round surface-mounted downlight built from white powder-coated aluminium, housing an integrated 12W LED module that delivers 3000K warm white light. The cylindrical housing projects 9.2cm from the ceiling and contains two separate light sources: a primary downward-facing beam and a secondary upward-facing backlight that illuminates the ceiling recess behind the fitting.

Designed for rooms with low ceilings or where recessed downlights cannot be installed due to shallow ceiling voids, the Planet surface-mounts directly to a standard UK ceiling rose or junction box on AC 220-240V mains. The three-mode operation switches between main beam only, backlight only, or both simultaneously, controlled by a standard wall switch cycling through the modes. The main beam provides focused task light over kitchen counters, hallway zones or bathroom mirrors, while the backlight adds soft ambient wash when both modes run together.

The white aluminium construction weighs approximately 450g and the IP20 rating limits the fitting to dry indoor locations only — bathrooms require Zone 2 or beyond placement. The 10cm diameter and 9.2cm projection suit corridors, compact bathrooms, walk-in wardrobes and kitchen soffits where a traditional recessed downlight would require cutting into joists. The 12W LED runs cooler than halogen equivalents and the 3000K colour temperature sits between neutral and warm, pairing comfortably with both cool greys and warmer timber or brass accents.

How do the three modes work?

The fitting cycles through three modes using a standard wall switch: main downlight only, ceiling backlight only, or both together. Each time you flip the switch off and back on, it advances to the next mode in the sequence.

Can this be used in bathrooms?

The IP20 rating limits the Planet to dry indoor locations. In bathrooms it must be installed in Zone 2 or beyond (at least 60cm from a shower head or bath edge) where direct water spray cannot reach the fitting.

Does it require a recessed cavity in the ceiling?

No. The Planet is surface-mounted, designed for ceilings where recessed downlights cannot be installed due to shallow ceiling voids or where cutting into joists is not practical. It mounts directly to a standard ceiling rose or junction box.

Is the LED replaceable?

The 12W LED module is integrated into the fitting and is not user-replaceable. The module is rated for approximately 30,000 hours of operation and is covered by Maytoni's 5-year warranty.
