In our view a good mirror earns its place by working hard, and this is one we reach for whenever a room needs more light and a sense of calm. It brings depth to a hallway, opens up a narrow landing and gives a bedroom corner somewhere to pause. The tall rounded-rectangle shape stands frameless against the wall and is crossed by a slim oak shelf, so it reads as part of the room rather than an object hung above it. We like how the Petrol Blue softens the reflection at the edges, adding a quiet wash of colour that shifts gently as the daylight moves around it.

The shelf gives you a spot for the small things that usually end up scattered, and we have included a little box that sits neatly beside the glass for keys, jewellery or a stray pair of glasses. Standing 118cm tall and 78cm wide, with a depth of 15cm, it holds its own without crowding a wall, and at 11kg it feels reassuringly solid when you set it in place. The big shelf takes up to 10kg when the weight is spread evenly across the surface, so it stays practical as well as good to look at. Assembly takes around 45 minutes, and we have kept the steps straightforward so you are not left puzzling over it.

It is made from solid oak with MDF, glass, steel plated in brass and artificial leather, a mix we chose so each part does the job it is best at. The Black Oak brings a deeper tone to the shelf, warmer and grounding beneath the Petrol Blue glass. To care for it, wipe the surface with a soft dry cloth and avoid harsh sprays near the leather. We would happily set it in an entrance, a dressing area or a reading nook where the light can do its work.
