Description

This glass octopus figurine shows a bright little octopus draped over a rounded rock, its tentacles curling down the sides and flicking out at the tips. The head and upper body are a vivid red streaked with white, fading to soft white along the arms, and the tentacle ends turn to clear glass that catches the light. Two small dark eyes ringed in white give it a curious, friendly look. The rock beneath is dark grey glass swirled with white, so the red octopus stands out sharply against it. It measures 9.6cm high, 10cm wide and 9.8cm deep, compact enough for the narrowest shelf or windowsill.

Because it is a freestanding piece with a broad, solid base, it needs no wall and no fixings: it simply sits wherever you put it. A mantelpiece, a bookshelf, a bedside table or a desk all suit it well, and on a sunny windowsill the glossy red head and clear tentacle tips pick up the daylight beautifully. It brings a cheerful splash of colour to a room with a coastal or seaside feel, and it works just as well in a study, where something bright and playful is a welcome break from paperwork.

The figurine is made entirely of glass, with a smooth, glossy surface from the top of the head to the base of the rock. Glass shows every fingerprint and speck of dust, so a quick wipe keeps it bright: dust it with a soft dry cloth, or wipe it with a damp cloth and dry it straight away. Like any glass ornament, it is happiest away from the edge of a busy shelf, where it cannot be knocked. We like it grouped with shells, driftwood or a small stack of books, and it is an easy, cheerful piece to give as a present, ready to brighten someone's shelf.
