Description

The NU-X NSS-4 Pulse is a miniature IR (impulse response) loader pedal that applies a chosen tonal profile to your input signal. Speaker cabinets, or cabs, shape the tone of a guitar or bass in a musical way, and that sound is usually picked up with a microphone before heading to a mixing console for recording or sound reinforcement. Running a signal straight into a mixer without a cab tends to sound sterile and harsh, and this is where Pulse steps in.

Pulse can mimic both the speaker cabinet and the microphone, so you can take the guitar signal from the preamp section and send it directly into a mixer channel. It can also model the response of an acoustic guitar, helping an electric sound more like an acoustic or making an electro-acoustic sound more natural. There are three IR modes covering guitar cab, bass cab and acoustic guitar, each with 8 selectable types, adjusted using the Level and Space controls. Buffered or true bypass is selectable, and it runs in mono or stereo.

A 3.5mm headphone output means you can use Pulse for silent practice, while the built-in audio to USB interface lets it act as the front end for a PC or Mac recording setup. The USB-C port handles the editor software, audio in and out, and firmware updates, with the editor available from the NU-X website. The chassis is a strong, lightweight aluminium die-cast unit. Power comes from a 9V centre negative DC supply drawing 100mA, which is not supplied. Pulse is a handy multi-tool for guitarists and bass players covering practice, live and recording work.
