Description

The NU-X NDL-3 Hook combines a drum machine and a phrase looper in one small pedal. The drum section runs from the play/pause button, which also acts as a Smart Tap Tempo trigger. You can choose from 11 rhythm styles covering a wide range of music genres, and the independent Drum Level control lets you set how loud the drums sit. An LED inside the Smart Tap Tempo trigger shows the current tempo at a glance.

The built-in 24-bit looper gives you up to 6 minutes of recording time with unlimited overdubs. Tapping the footswitch starts recording, tapping again begins playback, and a further tap starts overdubbing. Holding the footswitch undoes overdubs one at a time, or erases the loop when playback has stopped. Two recording modes are on offer: NR mode for normal recording, and AR mode, which only starts recording once you play a guitar note. The Hook can also read the rhythm of your phrase and set the drum tempo to match it, and the guitar loop has its own level control to balance against the drum track.

Connections include a guitar input, a mixed output jack, and a headphones minijack (US: 1/8-inch jack) for silent practice. A Type-C USB port handles firmware updates and lets you save or load onboard loop recordings as WAV files to a PC or Mac. It samples at 48kHz/24-bit with a 103dB dynamic range, runs on a 9Vdc centre-negative supply, and draws under 100mA. Measuring 94 x 53 x 51mm and weighing 175g, the Hook is a full practice and accompaniment tool for a solo guitarist who wants useful features that stay simple to work.

What is the difference between NR and AR recording modes?
