Description

The Norfolk is a traditional outdoor wall lantern with a black metal frame and hand-leaded glass panels, each composed of five separate pieces of glass held within lead cames. The lantern measures 359mm tall by 257mm wide with a 125mm projection from the wall, housing a single E27 bulb fitting (bulb sold separately) rated up to 60W. The IP44 rating protects against splashing water from any direction, making it suitable for covered porches, under eaves, and other semi-sheltered outdoor positions.

Designed for mounting on external walls at doorways, porches, patios and along pathways, the Norfolk pairs traditional lantern styling with practical outdoor durability. The hand-leaded glass diffuses the light source into a softer glow across the glass panels rather than projecting a focused beam, creating ambient light that marks entrances and illuminates immediate ground areas without harsh glare. The black finish on the metal frame suits both traditional brick and stone facades and contemporary rendered exteriors.

Each glass panel is assembled by hand using lead came construction, meaning the thin metal strips that hold the glass pieces show slight variation between individual lanterns. This is a feature of the craft method rather than a defect. The black powder-coated finish on the frame resists corrosion in typical UK outdoor conditions. The lantern fits standard outdoor wall fixings and connects to mains-powered outdoor lighting circuits via a weatherproof back box.

Frequently Asked

What does IP44 mean for outdoor use?

IP44 means the lantern is protected against solid objects larger than 1mm and against splashing water from any direction. This makes it suitable for covered outdoor positions like porches, under eaves, and other areas where the fitting is not directly exposed to heavy rain or standing water. It is not suitable for fully exposed positions without overhead cover.

What bulb does the Norfolk take?

The lantern takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 60W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED filament bulb between 4-8W and 2200K-2700K to suit the traditional lantern aesthetic.

How is the glass constructed?

Each glass panel is hand-leaded, meaning five separate pieces of glass are held within thin lead cames to form the diamond pattern visible in the image. This traditional construction method means slight variation between individual lanterns is normal and part of the craft process.

Can it be used on a gate post or pillar?

The Norfolk is designed as a wall-mounted lantern with a flat back plate. For gate posts or pillars, Elstead produces pier-mounted versions in the same range with a different base configuration. Use the search function to find pier-mount alternatives if needed.
