Description

A frosted white glass globe hangs from a matt black suspension here, giving a shape that reads as a simple sphere from every angle. The glass is 25cm across, enough to hold its own above a table without crowding the room. Light passes through the frosting rather than straight out of it, so glare is softened and the ball glows fairly evenly across its surface. The drop is adjustable, so the hanging height can be set to suit the room.

We reach for this one over a small dining table, above a breakfast bar, or in pairs either side of a bed, where the round shade keeps sightlines open. It takes a single E27 lamp and we would fit an LED, either a standard pear shape or a globe, up to 20W; both sit tidily behind the frosted glass. With a compatible lamp and a suitable dimmer, the level can be brought down for the evening. Hallways and landings suit it too, where there is height to spare.

The shade is glass, while the suspension and ceiling plate are finished in matt black rather than a gloss, so reflections and fingerprints are less of a worry. To clean, switch off at the wall and let the lamp go cold, then wipe the globe with a barely damp cloth and dry it off, keeping sprays and anything abrasive away from the black finish. Being rated for dry rooms only, it should stay out of bathrooms and open porches. It carries a one year warranty. The same frosted white globe is offered on a satin nickel suspension, and the range also runs to mirrored and smoke fade glass versions, as well as larger globes where a room asks for more presence. Lamps are not supplied.
