Description

This Mercury cable tester checks common network and phone lines that use RJ45 and RJ11 connections. Connect one end of the cable to the main unit and the other to the detachable remote unit, then turn on the power. The LED indicators show you how each conductor is wired, so you can quickly tell whether a run is good or faulty.

The LEDs flag short circuits, open circuits, crossover connections and incorrect wiring. That makes it a handy tool when you're terminating your own leads or trying to work out why a data or phone line isn't behaving. The remote unit slots neatly onto the main body for storage, so the two halves stay together when you're moving between jobs.

Setup and operation are straightforward, with no menus or settings to work through. The main unit runs on a single 9V PP3 battery, which isn't supplied. It measures 100 x 100 x 28mm and weighs 90g without the battery, so it sits comfortably in a toolbag or drawer. It handles both Ethernet network cables and standard telephone leads, covering the two connector types most often found in home and small office wiring.
