Description

This Mercury desolder braid gives you a simple way to lift solder off a printed circuit board (PCB) without any fuss. The braid is made from fine copper strands measuring 1.0mm wide, wound onto a miniature reel. When you press heated braid against a joint, the copper wicks up the molten solder and pulls it away, leaving the point clean and ready for rework.

The reel uses a pop-open design, so you can pull the braid you need and keep the rest tidy on the spool. It holds 1.5 metres of braid, which is plenty for repeated cleaning of solder pads, through-holes and connection points. At just 7 grams and measuring 10 x 52mm in diameter, it slips easily into a toolbox, a component drawer or a jacket pocket.

We find braid like this handy for tidying up after a repair, removing surplus solder from bridged pins, or preparing a joint before you resolder it. Also known in some places as desoldering wick, it works alongside a solder sucker for bigger jobs. To use it, place the braid over the joint, apply the tip of your soldering iron on top, and let the heat draw the solder into the copper. Move to a fresh section of braid as each part fills up.
