Description

The Mercury is a 3-pin IEC plug rated for 250V AC at 6A, with a shrouded housing that covers the live pins when the plug is partially withdrawn from its socket. The shrouding reduces the risk of accidental contact with live metal during disconnection, a useful safety feature in installations where equipment is frequently connected and disconnected.

Designed for mains leads on audio equipment, projectors, IT hardware and other low-to-medium draw devices, the plug accepts cables up to 8mm in diameter and includes a rubber cable protector and internal strain relief to prevent the cable from being pulled free of the terminals. The plug body is moulded in high-impact ABS plastic in a dark grey finish.

The 6A rating suits devices drawing up to 1,500W on 250V mains. For higher-draw equipment a 10A or 13A IEC plug is needed. The three-pin configuration (live, neutral, earth) matches the C14 inlet found on most professional audio and IT equipment manufactured from the 1990s onwards.

Frequently Asked

What cable diameter does it accept?

The plug accepts cables up to 8mm in diameter. The internal cable clamp grips securely on cables from approximately 5mm to 8mm, with the rubber cable protector flexing to suit different cable thicknesses.

What equipment uses a 3-pin IEC plug?

The 3-pin IEC plug (IEC 60320 C13 to C14 standard) is the most common mains connector on professional audio equipment, projectors, IT hardware, monitors and small appliances. It mates with the C14 inlet on the equipment side.

Is it suitable for outdoor or damp environments?

No. The plug carries no IP rating and is designed for dry indoor use only. For outdoor or damp environments a weatherproof connector is needed.

Can I rewire this plug myself?

Yes. The plug body unscrews to reveal three terminals (live, neutral, earth) for direct wiring. Standard electrical safety practice applies — ensure the equipment is unplugged from the mains before working on the cable.
