Description

The Mercury is a 2.1mm DC power socket with screw-in terminals, rated for 5A at 24V DC. The socket accepts a standard 2.1mm DC barrel plug on one side and presents two screw terminals (positive and negative) on the other, allowing permanent cable connections without soldering. The compact 39 x 14 x 13mm housing is built from impact-resistant plastic with a black finish.

Designed for LED tape installations, CCTV camera power distribution, guitar effects pedal boards and other low-voltage DC applications, the screw terminals make it simple to connect bare cable ends from a PSU or transformer. The 5A current rating handles typical 12V LED tape runs up to 60W or multiple 12V CCTV cameras on a single line. The modular design means damaged sockets can be replaced without re-terminating the cable.

The terminals use captive Phillips-head screws that clamp the cable strands without requiring ferrules or pre-tinning. The socket body is marked with polarity symbols (+ and -) on the green terminal block to prevent reverse-polarity connections. At 6g the socket adds negligible weight to pedal boards or tape installations where multiple sockets are used along a cable run.

Frequently Asked

What cable gauge can the screw terminals accept?

The screw terminals typically accept cable gauges from 0.5mm² to 2.5mm² depending on strand count and insulation diameter. Solid core and stranded cables both work, though stranded is more common in low-voltage DC applications.

Is the polarity marked on the socket?

Yes. The green terminal block is marked with + and - symbols indicating which terminal connects to the centre pin (positive) and outer barrel (negative) of the DC plug. Standard 2.1mm DC barrel plugs are centre-positive by convention.

Can this be used for 12V LED tape?

Yes. The 5A rating at 24V DC means it can handle 12V LED tape runs up to 60W (12V x 5A). For typical 14.4W/m tape that allows around 4 metres on a single socket without voltage drop concerns.

Do I need to solder the cable to the terminals?

No. The screw terminals clamp bare cable strands directly. Strip 6-8mm of insulation, insert the bare wire into the terminal slot and tighten the screw until the cable is held firmly.
