Description

The Mercury 12V DC in-line car lighter socket is a female cigar lighter receptacle designed for permanent wiring into 12V DC systems in vehicles, caravans, boats and off-grid power setups. The socket accepts standard male car lighter plugs and is rated to handle up to 10A continuous current, equivalent to 120W at 12V.

The socket terminates in solder tags rather than pre-attached cable, allowing it to be wired into custom cable runs or retrofit installations where an existing cable needs a cigar lighter socket added mid-run. Brass contacts inside the socket body ensure reliable connection with male plugs, and a ribbed rubber cable protector at the rear of the socket provides strain relief where the cable enters the body.

Designed for automotive accessory wiring (dash cams, phone chargers, air compressors, portable fridges), marine 12V systems, and caravan leisure battery circuits, the in-line format means the socket can be positioned away from a dashboard or panel and mounted wherever cable routing allows. The ribbed rubber protector grips cable outer diameters between approximately 5-8mm, preventing flex fatigue at the solder joint.

Frequently Asked

What cable gauge is needed for 10A at 12V?

For runs up to 2-3 metres, 1.5mm² cable is typically adequate for 10A at 12V DC. Longer runs should use 2.5mm² cable to reduce voltage drop. The socket's solder tags accept cable up to approximately 2.5mm² comfortably.

Does it come with cable attached?

No. The socket terminates in solder tags, requiring the user to solder and heat-shrink their own cable. This allows custom cable lengths and integration into existing wiring looms.

Can it be used in marine environments?

The socket is suitable for leisure marine use in dry cabin locations (chart tables, helm consoles). It is not waterproof and should not be used in exposed deck positions or bilge areas without additional weatherproof housing.

What's the difference between this and a panel-mount socket?

Panel-mount sockets fix into a drilled hole in a dashboard or fascia panel with a threaded collar and nut. This in-line socket has no mounting collar and is designed to sit loose in a cable run, typically cable-tied to structure or tucked into a glove box or under-seat cavity.
