Description

The Mercury car lighter plug is a 12V DC connector with spring-loaded contacts, a rubber cable protector at the base, and a 5A fuse (6 x 32mm) housed inside the body. The plug fits standard vehicle cigarette lighter sockets and provides a terminated connection point for running low-voltage devices from a car, van, motorhome or boat electrical system.

Designed for DIY wiring of dash cams, phone chargers, CB radios, sat-navs, camping accessories and similar 12V equipment, the plug accepts cable entry through the rear and crimps or solders onto the central positive pin and outer negative barrel. The spring-loaded contacts maintain pressure on the socket walls once inserted, reducing the risk of intermittent connection from vibration or movement in the vehicle.

The 5A fuse provides overcurrent protection for both the connected device and the vehicle wiring. The fuse is user-replaceable by unscrewing the tip cap, allowing quick fault diagnosis and repair without replacing the entire plug. The rubber cable protector at the base reduces strain on the cable entry point and provides a degree of flex relief where the plug meets the cable jacket.

What voltage does it support?

The plug is rated for 12V DC systems, which is the standard voltage in most cars, vans and smaller motorhomes. It is not suitable for 24V commercial vehicle systems without checking the connected device's voltage compatibility.

What current can it handle?

The plug is fused at 5A, meaning the total current draw of the connected device must not exceed 5A (60W at 12V). If the device draws more than 5A, the fuse will blow to protect the circuit.

Is the fuse replaceable?

Yes. The fuse is a standard 6 x 32mm cartridge housed in the tip of the plug. Unscrew the tip cap, remove the blown fuse, and replace it with a new 5A fuse of the same dimensions.

What cable gauge does it accept?

The plug accepts cable entry through the rear and can accommodate typical automotive cable gauges used for 12V accessories. For sustained 5A loads, use cable rated for at least 5A continuous current to avoid voltage drop and heat build-up.
