The Marlgrove wall light is a small Tiffany-style fitting for the sides of a room, 335mm wide and 150mm high, projecting just 190mm from the wall. The shade is made from cut pieces of multicoloured glass leaded into a metal frame and mounted on a backplate, so the light washes both up the wall and out into the room. It takes one E14 golf bulb up to 40W, supplied separately, and weighs 1kg. That light weight and shallow projection make it straightforward to place.

Wall lights like this are the answer in rooms where floor and table space is already taken. We see them fitted in pairs either side of a fireplace or a bed, along a hallway to mark the route, up a staircase, and in a living room alcove where a lamp would be in the way. A wall sconce at 190mm projection stays clear of a doorway or a corridor, and the coloured glass gives a low warm glow at night. It suits period houses, snugs and traditional rooms.

The glass is cut and leaded by hand into the frame, so the pattern varies a little from one fitting to the next. The backplate and frame are finished in a warm tone that keeps the glass to the front. Dust with a dry soft cloth and use a barely damp cloth for marks, keeping sprays and solvents off the leaded seams. It is dimmable when paired with a suitable bulb and switch, and it is a Class 2 double-insulated fitting so no earth is needed. It is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms. Marlgrove pendants, a semi-flush and a table lamp share the same glass.
