Marlgrove Medium Tiffany Pendant - Multicoloured

The Marlgrove medium pendant is a downward Tiffany-style shade, 400mm across, made from cut pieces of multicoloured glass leaded into a metal frame. The wide shallow shape casts a defined pool of light below while the coloured glass glows at the sides, which is what gives this kind of pendant its warmth. The drop adjusts across a long range, from 500mm up to 1440mm, so it works on a standard ceiling or a tall one. It takes one E27 GLS bulb up to 60W, bought separately, and weighs 2.3kg.

This is the size most people reach for as a single ceiling light over a kitchen island, a breakfast bar or a small dining table, and it hangs well in a stairwell or a landing where the long drop earns its keep. The single lamp keeps it gentle rather than bright, so treat it as the warm layer in a room and pair it with downlights or lamps where you need working light. It suits period houses, cottages and traditional interiors, and gives a plain hallway something to look at.

The shade is put together by hand, piece by piece, so the colour placement varies slightly between individual shades. The metal frame and gallery are finished in a warm tone that keeps the focus on the glass. Dust with a dry soft cloth and wipe the glass with a barely damp one when needed, keeping polishes and solvents away from the leaded seams. It is IP20 for indoor rooms and dimmable when paired with a suitable bulb and switch. This is a Class 2 double-insulated fitting, so no earth connection is needed. How is the glass made?

Individual pieces of coloured glass are cut, then joined with lead into a metal frame by hand. This is the Tiffany-style method, and the small differences between shades come from that hand work.

What is the best way to clean it?

A dry soft cloth for dust, and a barely damp cloth for marks, dried straight after. Do not use spray cleaners, polish or solvents, which can dull the lead between the glass pieces.

How low will it hang?

The drop runs from 500mm to 1440mm and the shade is 400mm wide. Over an island, most people set the base of the shade around 750mm to 900mm above the worktop.

Which bulb should I choose?

One E27 screw bulb up to 60W, GLS shape, not included. A warm white LED at around 2700K brings out the colours in the glass without adding heat.

Does it need an earth?

No. It is a Class 2 double-insulated fitting, so it can be installed on a supply without an earth, though we would always have an electrician make the connection.

Can I use it in a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms only and has no protection against moisture or splashing.
