Description

The Marlgrove large inverted pendant turns the Tiffany-style shade the other way up, so the leaded glass forms a wide open bowl and throws light upward across the ceiling as well as down into the room. The bowl is 500mm across and holds three E27 GLS bulbs up to 60W each, giving it the output to light a dining table on its own. The drop adjusts between 600mm and 1000mm, and the whole fitting weighs 3.4kg. Bulbs are supplied separately, so choose the tone of light to suit the room.

We find an inverted bowl of this size works best as the main ceiling light over a dining table, a round kitchen table or a hall with a decent ceiling height. Because the bulbs sit down inside the bowl rather than pointing at eye level, the light is soft and there is no glare when you are seated beneath it. It suits a traditional or period room, and it sits comfortably in a plainer modern space where the coloured glass supplies the only pattern. Three lamps also make it a practical choice for open-plan rooms.

The shade is assembled by hand from cut pieces of multicoloured glass, leaded together and set into a metal frame with three chains carrying the bowl. Small variations in the pattern are normal and come with the making. Dust the glass with a dry soft cloth, and lift any marks with a barely damp cloth rather than a spray cleaner. Check the bowl for dust now and then, as an upward-facing shade collects more than a downward one. It is IP20 for indoor use and a Class 1 fitting needing an earth. A smaller Marlgrove acorn pendant and a semi-flush share the same glass.
