Description

The MAGfire BD1 is an optical beam smoke detector with a 50m range, expandable to 120m with the optional BD1LRK long-range kit. The detector uses a dual-unit design: a transmitter sends an infrared beam to a receiver mounted opposite, and smoke particles crossing the beam reduce signal strength, triggering an alarm when obscuration passes the threshold. Integral laser alignment guides installation, and the Auto Align function automatically compensates for minor beam drift caused by building movement or thermal expansion.

Designed for large open spaces where traditional point smoke detectors are impractical — warehouse ceilings, atriums, aircraft hangars, sports halls — the BD1 covers a linear path with a single device pair. The 24V DC power draw peaks at 35mA, compatible with most commercial fire alarm panels. The transmitter and receiver mount to opposite walls or structural supports with adjustable brackets, and the laser alignment tool allows fine-tuning during commissioning before the infrared beam is activated.

The white housing carries an IP55 rating, making the detector suitable for dusty environments and light water spray exposure typical of industrial or semi-outdoor spaces. The EN 54-12 approval certifies the detector for use in European fire detection and alarm systems, meeting the smoke sensitivity and environmental stability requirements of the standard. Physical dimensions of 295mm × 160mm × 210mm per unit require adequate wall or beam mounting clearance during installation.

Frequently Asked

What range does the BD1 cover and can it be extended?

The standard BD1 covers up to 50m between transmitter and receiver. The optional BD1LRK long-range kit extends this to 120m, allowing coverage of larger spaces without adding additional detector pairs.

What is Auto Align and why does it matter?

Auto Align automatically compensates for minor beam drift caused by building movement, thermal expansion or settling. This reduces false alarms triggered by the beam falling slightly out of alignment after installation, and minimises the need for manual realignment over time.

Is the BD1 suitable for outdoor use?

The IP55 rating protects the detector from dust ingress and low-pressure water jets, making it suitable for semi-outdoor or covered environments such as loading bays, canopies and warehouses with dust or light moisture. It is not rated for full outdoor exposure to rain or direct weathering.

What voltage and current does it require?

The BD1 runs on 24V DC and draws a maximum of 35mA, compatible with most commercial fire alarm control panels. Verify your panel's auxiliary output capacity before connecting multiple beam detectors.
