Description

The MAGfire PSD212 is a 12V optical smoke detector with an integrated relay base, certified to EN54-7 for use in conventional fire alarm systems. The detector operates on 9-30VDC and draws 29mA at 12V when in alarm state. The optical sensing chamber uses a light-scattering method to detect smoke particles, making it particularly responsive to slow-burning, smouldering fires that produce visible smoke before open flames develop.

Designed for commercial, industrial and residential fire detection systems, the detector mounts to a standard ceiling box via the included relay base. The relay output allows the detector to trigger local sounders, relay modules or control panel zones independently of the main detection circuit. The white plastic housing blends into standard commercial ceiling environments and the low-profile design suits rooms with ceiling heights from 2.4m to 10.5m depending on room volume and airflow.

The EN54-7 certification confirms the detector meets European performance standards for optical smoke detection, including sensitivity thresholds, false alarm immunity and environmental durability. The 9-30VDC operating range provides compatibility with both 12V and 24V nominal fire alarm panel outputs, with the detector regulating internally to maintain consistent sensitivity across the voltage range. The relay base terminals accept 0.5-2.5mm² cable, typical for fire alarm installation in the UK.

Frequently Asked

What's the difference between optical and ionisation smoke detectors?

Optical detectors like the PSD212 use light-scattering to detect visible smoke particles, making them more responsive to slow, smouldering fires. Ionisation detectors respond faster to fast-flaming fires with smaller particles. Optical detectors are generally preferred in UK commercial installations due to lower false alarm rates from cooking fumes and steam.

Can this detector be used on a 24V fire alarm panel?

Yes. The detector operates on 9-30VDC, so it works on both 12V and 24V nominal fire alarm systems. The internal circuitry regulates the voltage to maintain consistent detection sensitivity across the operating range.

What does the relay base do?

The relay base provides a switched output that activates when the detector goes into alarm. This output can trigger local sounders, relay modules or control panel inputs independently of the main detection loop, allowing for zone identification or local notification without involving the central panel.

Is the detector suitable for residential use?

The PSD212 is designed primarily for commercial and industrial conventional fire alarm systems rather than standalone residential battery-powered smoke alarms. It requires connection to a fire alarm control panel with a 9-30VDC supply and is typically specified by fire safety professionals for larger installations.

Shipping & Returns

Free worldwide delivery

Free worldwide delivery on all orders over £99. International orders for third-party brand products may be subject to an additional courier surcharge based on volumetric weight, particularly on larger lighting fixtures — if a surcharge applies, our team will email you with the amount before dispatch and you can proceed or cancel for a full refund. See full delivery terms.

Returns

30-day returns window from delivery. As all our products are electrical or lighting goods, returned items must be inspected and recertified by a qualified electrician before resale — the cost of this inspection (25–40% of the item value) is deducted from your refund. Customers pay return shipping. Made-to-order, special-order and clearance items cannot be returned. See full returns policy.
