MagDuo 4 Zone Two-Wire Fire Alarm Panel Kit

The MagDuo 4 Zone Kit is a complete two-wire fire alarm system built around the ESP MAGDUO4 control panel, which manages up to four detection zones on a single pair of cables. The kit includes seven selectable optical smoke/heat detectors (six with inbuilt sounders, one with sounder and strobe), two resettable manual call points, and a head removal tool for servicing the detectors.

Designed for small commercial premises, multi-occupancy residential buildings, guest houses and offices where BS 5839-1 or BS 5839-6 compliance is required, the two-wire topology reduces installation labour and cable runs compared to conventional four-wire systems. Each detector contains both optical smoke sensing and heat sensing modes, selectable on-site via DIP switches on the detector base, allowing the same hardware to be configured for different room types (kitchens, bedrooms, corridors) without stocking multiple detector models.

The control panel measures 380mm wide by 350mm high by 240mm deep and requires two 12V 3.2Ah sealed lead-acid batteries for standby power (batteries not included). The panel outputs fire, fault and test status via LED indicators and relay contacts, and includes zone-by-zone isolation for servicing individual circuits without taking the entire system offline. The detectors communicate alarm, fault and removal status back to the panel over the two-wire loop, and the inbuilt sounders provide local warning at the point of detection as well as panel-driven general alarm.

All detectors mount on twist-lock bases supplied with the kit. The MAGDUOSHDSS detector (the unit with strobe) is typically positioned in circulation areas or on escape routes where visual alarm indication is needed for hearing-impaired occupants or noisy environments. The manual call points are surface-mounted and use resettable glass elements rather than single-use frangible covers, reducing consumable replacement costs over the system lifetime.

What batteries does the panel require?

The MAGDUO4 panel requires two 12V 3.2Ah sealed lead-acid (SLA) batteries for standby power. Batteries are not included in the kit and must be purchased separately.

What's the difference between two-wire and conventional four-wire systems?

Two-wire systems run a single cable pair to all devices on a zone, carrying both power and alarm signals. Conventional four-wire systems run separate pairs for power and signalling. Two-wire topology reduces cable costs and installation time, particularly on larger or more complex layouts.

Can the detectors be used in kitchens?

Yes. Each MAGDUOSHDS and MAGDUOSHDSS detector is selectable between optical smoke mode and heat mode via DIP switches on the base. In kitchens prone to cooking fumes, set the detector to heat mode to reduce false alarms while maintaining fire detection capability.

Does the kit meet British Standards for fire alarm systems?

The MagDuo system is designed to comply with BS 5839-1 (commercial/non-domestic) and BS 5839-6 (domestic) when installed and commissioned by a competent person. Final compliance depends on correct system design, detector placement, cable specification and commissioning records for the specific premises.
