A smoke tinted globe hangs from a slender antique gold suspension, the open mouth of the shade left clear so the lamp itself shows through. At 12cm across, the globe reads as a small point of light rather than a bulky shade, and the tint softens the glare without swallowing it. The drop is adjustable, so the shade can sit tucked up close to the ceiling or fall well down over a surface. It takes an E27 lamp and will dim, given a suitable lamp and a dimmer to match.

We reach for a globe this size where a broader pendant would crowd the room: above a bedside table, over the turn of a stairwell, in a narrow hall, or hung in a line along a kitchen island. The suspension extends to 1.77m at its longest, which covers a tall hallway as well as a standard ceiling height. With 20W as the ceiling on lamp power, the light stays gentle, so it suits places you pass through or sit under rather than a room asked to do close work.

The shade carries a smoke tint over antique gold metalwork, a finish with a little warmth and depth to it rather than a bright shine. Dust it with a soft cloth, and for fingerprints use a cloth barely damp, working with the light switched off and the lamp cold. Keep it to dry indoor rooms; a bathroom or a porch is not the place for it. It carries a one year warranty. How far down does this pendant hang?

The drop is adjustable from 270mm at its shortest to 1770mm at its longest, so it can sit close to the ceiling or hang low over a table or worktop.

Which lamp should I use?

One E27 lamp of up to 20W. An LED capsule or globe works well here, and the shape you choose will show through the tinted shade, so pick one you are happy to see. Lamps are not supplied.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you use a dimmable lamp with a dimmer that suits it. No dimmer is supplied with the pendant.

How big is the globe?

It measures 120mm in diameter, which is small enough to hang singly over a side table or in a run of two or three along an island.

How do I keep the shade looking right?

Wait until the lamp is cold, then dust with a dry soft cloth. Marks and fingerprints come off with a cloth wrung out well in warm water; avoid abrasive creams and sprays on the antique gold.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is meant for dry indoor rooms such as halls, bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms, not for bathrooms or covered outdoor areas.
