Small globe shades have a way of doing more than their size suggests, and this one is a good example. The shade is black and clear, open at the mouth so light falls cleanly downwards, and it hangs beneath a pleated disc in antique gold that gives the fitting its warmth. At 12cm across it stays neat overhead. The suspension is adjustable and extends to 1.7m, so the drop can be judged against the room rather than settled for you.

It takes an E27 lamp of up to 20W and looks best hung in a pair or a line over a kitchen island, a breakfast bar or a long dining table. Hung short it suits a hallway or a small landing; hung long it earns its keep beside a bed where the bedside table is too narrow for a lamp. We would choose a clear LED globe here so the filament reads through the shade. It will dim with a compatible lamp and dimmer, both bought separately.

The pleating on the gold disc breaks up reflections rather than showing every mark, and the glass keeps its shape crisp against the darker tone. For cleaning, switch the light off at the wall, wipe the glass with a barely damp cloth and dry it before power goes back on; the gold wants nothing stronger than a dry duster. It carries a one year warranty. This is a wired fitting for dry rooms indoors, and it needs an earthed ceiling connection. The globe measures 120mm in diameter, so it reads as a small, jewel-like pendant rather than a broad shade.

How high or low can it hang?

The drop adjusts from 270mm at its shortest to 1770mm at its longest, which covers everything from a close-hung hall light to a low pendant over a table.

Which lamp should I use?

It takes an E27 lamp rated up to 20W, and an LED chosen to suit the shade works well. Lamps are not supplied.

Can I put it on a dimmer?

Yes, provided you use a dimmable lamp with a matching dimmer switch. Neither is included.

Can it go in a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20 and belongs in dry rooms such as kitchens, dining rooms, halls and bedrooms.

How should I clean the glass?

Turn the power off and let everything cool, then use a soft cloth very lightly dampened with water on the glass, drying it fully. Keep solvents and abrasive creams away from the antique gold.
