Description

Pink brings the colour here, in a ripple-textured wine shade held close under a polished chrome plate. The whole fitting sits tight to the ceiling and measures 15cm across, so it reads as a small point of colour overhead rather than something that fills the room. One E27 lamp sits inside, and the rippled surface breaks the light into soft bands as it spreads. It will dim, given a suitable lamp and a dimmer switch to match.

We reach for this where a pendant would hang too low: a hall with a shallow ceiling, the turn of a landing, a small bedroom, a cloakroom, or the patch of ceiling behind a door that swings wide. It suits anyone who wants a little colour overhead without giving up headroom, and it repeats neatly along a corridor at even spacing. Because the shade is compact and the light sits close to the ceiling, we would put a warm white LED capsule or a small round lamp in it and let the pink do the work; a clear filament lamp will also show through the ripple if you want the sparkle.

The metalwork is finished in bright polished chrome, and the shade tapers in the manner of a wine glass with the ripple running round it. A dry duster over the shade keeps it looking right; for fingermarks on the chrome, use a barely damp cloth and buff dry, with the circuit switched off and the lamp no longer hot. It belongs indoors, in dry rooms, on an ordinary household lighting circuit. It carries a one year warranty.
