Description

Three round globe shades in smoke hang beneath a round antique gold plate, each one open at the mouth so the lamp inside is visible and the light drops straight down. At 40cm across, it reads as a generous circle on the ceiling while keeping a shallow profile. The smoke tint softens the glow and takes the glare off a clear lamp. We would fit an LED globe lamp in each holder and let the shape do the work.

It works where a hanging pendant would be awkward: hallways, landings, a bedroom with a lower ceiling, a small kitchen or a study. The shades spread light across a whole room rather than one corner, so it can serve as the main fitting in a space of moderate size. Dimming is possible with suitable lamps and a compatible dimmer, which is worth arranging in a bedroom. In a hall we would choose warm white lamps to keep the smoke shades looking rich after dark. It is a shape we suggest for flats and cottages where the ceiling sits low but the room still needs proper light.

The shades are open-mouthed globes in a smoke tint, set against metalwork in antique gold, warmer and softer than a bright plated gold, which sits happily with brass ironmongery and wooden furniture. Keep it to dry indoor rooms, well away from showers and splashing. Cleaning is a dry cloth over the shades now and then, with sprays kept away from the gold. It carries a one year warranty.
