Description

The Larkbury medium pendant hangs a 400mm shade of Tiffany-style leaded glass on a drop that adjusts from 460mm to 1430mm, so it can sit low over a table or high in a stairwell. The multicoloured glass is cut piece by piece and joined with soldered seams over a metal frame, and the shade flares so light falls onto the surface below as well as out through the pattern. A single E27 GLS bulb of up to 60W is needed and is supplied separately. The fitting weighs 2.2kg, the lightest of the Larkbury pendants.

At 400mm across it suits a small dining table, a kitchen peninsula, a hallway, a landing or a bedroom where you want one warm source of light instead of an even ceiling wash. Two or three hung in a line work well over a longer table or an island, and we would space them so the shades do not crowd each other. Leaded glass of this kind reads traditional and settles into Victorian and Edwardian rooms and cottages, while giving a plain modern room its only piece of colour and pattern. It is IP20 rated for dry indoor use.

It is wired as a Class 2 fitting, double insulated, so no earth is required at the ceiling rose, though the work still belongs to a qualified electrician. Dust the glass with a dry soft cloth or a soft brush and wipe marks with a barely damp cloth, drying at once and keeping solvents, polishes and abrasive creams off the solder lines. Let the bulb cool before changing it. It dims with a dimmable bulb and a compatible dimmer, and the larger Larkbury pendant repeats the same glass at 480mm.
