Description

The Hythe is a single-light outdoor wall lantern with a rectangular glass enclosure set in an old bronze metal frame, topped with a pyramidal roof cap and a curved carrying handle detail. The lantern houses one E14 bulb (sold separately) behind seeded glass panels that diffuse light while retaining the textured appearance of traditional handblown glass. The fixture carries an IP44 rating, protecting against dust ingress and water splashes from any direction.

Designed for covered outdoor positions including porches, entrance canopies, garage side doors and covered patios, the Hythe suits traditional, Arts and Crafts, and period property exteriors where a lantern-style wall light complements the architecture. The hinged door on one side of the glass enclosure opens to allow bulb changes without removing the entire fixture from the wall bracket. The old bronze finish is a dark brown-toned metal patina that mimics aged cast bronze rather than a polished or lacquered surface.

The seeded glass shows small bubbles and surface texture variation typical of rolled sheet glass production, giving each panel a slightly different density of seed pattern when backlit. The rectangular profile projects approximately 280mm from the wall once fitted, with a height of around 360mm, making it proportionate to standard residential door surrounds and garage side entrances without overwhelming the wall plane. The curved carrying handle at the top is a non-functional decorative element referencing portable oil lantern forms.

Frequently Asked

Does the Hythe carry an IP rating for outdoor use?

Yes. The Hythe is rated IP44, which protects against solid objects larger than 1mm and water splashes from any direction. This makes it suitable for covered outdoor positions such as porches, canopies and garage side doors. It is not rated for full weather exposure in unsheltered locations.

What bulb does it take?

The lantern takes a single E14 (small Edison screw) bulb up to 40W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most installations use a warm-white LED candle bulb between 4-6W and 2700K to suit the traditional lantern aesthetic.

How is the bulb changed?

One side of the glass enclosure is hinged and secured with a small catch. Open the hinged door to access the bulb holder without removing the fixture from the wall bracket. This allows bulb changes and cleaning without re-wiring.

What's the difference between old bronze and antique bronze finishes?

Old bronze is typically a darker, more muted brown-toned patina resembling naturally aged bronze, while antique bronze finishes tend to be warmer with more copper or amber tones. The Hythe's old bronze is a cool dark brown with minimal lustre, closer to weathered cast metal than polished or lacquered bronze.
