Description
The Harper is a 366mm diameter semi-flush ceiling light with an opal etched glass shade held between two polished chrome metal rings and suspended 253mm from the ceiling on three chrome arms. Three E27 bulb sockets sit inside the glass shade (bulbs sold separately), with decorative knurled chrome knobs allowing the lower ring to be unscrewed for bulb access.
Designed for rooms with ceiling heights between 2.2m and 2.7m, the Harper works in hallways, bedrooms, dining rooms and living rooms where a flush or recessed fitting would give insufficient light but a full pendant would hang too low. The 253mm drop from ceiling to the base of the shade keeps the fitting clear of head height in most residential rooms while providing enough space for the glass to diffuse light evenly across the ceiling and down into the room.
The opal etched glass softens the light output from the three bulbs, reducing glare and creating an even wash across the shade surface. The polished chrome finish on the frame provides high reflectivity, bouncing additional light off the ceiling and intensifying the ambient output. The decorative knobs on the lower ring echo mid-century American lighting design while serving a functional purpose — the entire lower assembly unscrews without tools for bulb changes.
Hinkley produces the Harper in the United States, and this Small variant sits between the brand's Extra Small (305mm) and Medium (445mm) sizes in the same range. The chrome frame and opal glass pair with both warm-toned interiors (where the chrome reads as a neutral metallic accent) and cooler contemporary schemes.

Frequently Asked
What bulbs does it take and are they included?
The Harper takes three E27 (Edison screw) bulbs up to 60W each. Bulbs are not included. Most users pair this with warm-white LED bulbs between 6-10W and 2700K-3000K for ambient room lighting.
What ceiling height is needed?
The fitting projects 253mm from the ceiling to the base of the glass shade. This works best in rooms with ceiling heights between 2.2m and 2.7m — high enough to avoid the fitting feeling cramped, low enough that a full pendant would hang into headroom.
How do you change the bulbs?
The decorative knobs on the lower chrome ring unscrew by hand (no tools needed), allowing the lower ring and glass shade to drop away from the upper assembly. Replace the bulbs, then re-thread the knobs to secure the shade back in place.
Is this dimmable?
Dimmer compatibility depends on the bulbs you fit. LED bulbs must be marked as dimmable to work with a dimmer switch. Halogen and traditional filament bulbs are inherently dimmable.
