Description

A compact capsule lamp with the familiar G9 pin base, made as a like for like stand in where a halogen capsule once sat. The body is clear, so the light source stays visible rather than diffused behind a frosted casing, and the tone is a warm white at 3000K that leans soft and slightly golden rather than crisp. It draws 2.5W and is not dimmable, so it wants a plain switched circuit rather than a trailing edge dimmer.

This is the lamp we reach for in wall lights, small glass pendants, mirror lights and multi-arm fittings where the lamp head is on show and a bulky retrofit would look wrong. Because the light spreads all round the capsule rather than firing in one direction, it fills small shades evenly and does not leave a hot spot on the ceiling above a pendant. It suits anyone working through a house swapping out old halogen capsules that ran hot and failed often, and it is worth buying in a set where a fitting takes several so the tone matches across every arm.

The clear casing keeps the slim capsule shape honest, at 13mm across, which matters in narrow glass shades and tight cups where anything wider fouls the shade. For care, let it go cold, then lift it out and give the casing a gentle wipe with a dry lint free cloth before it goes back in; dust and finger marks on a clear lamp show up more than they would on a frosted one. It carries a three year warranty. We keep this one on the shelf as our standard warm white G9 because it flatters brass, antique brass and smoked glass, and it sits quietly behind opal shades without a visible cold cast. Fittings themselves are sold separately.

Frequently Asked

How much light does it give out?

It produces 220 lumens, which is a close match for the small halogen capsules it replaces and is well suited to wall lights and little pendants where several lamps work together.

Can I put it on a dimmer?

No. This is a non-dimmable lamp and should be run on a standard switched circuit. Used on a dimmer it may flicker, buzz or fail early.

What size is it?

The capsule measures 13mm in diameter and 50mm in height, so it fits the narrow glass shades and shallow cups that G9 fittings usually have.

Is the light warm or cool?

Warm. At 3000K it gives a soft warm white, comfortable in sitting rooms, bedrooms and IP44 bathroom mirror lights, and kind to brass and bronze finishes.

How long should it last?

It is rated at 25,000 hours of average life, which is a considerable step up from the halogen capsules it stands in for.

Does the clear casing cause glare?

In an open fitting the lamp is visible and bright, as any clear lamp is. Behind opal or smoked glass it looks crisp and sparkles nicely; for a fully exposed position you may prefer a frosted lamp.
