Description

The Knightsbridge VFRDGICC is a fixed GU10 fire-rated downlight with a chrome bezel and die-cast housing, certified to BS476 Part 21 & 23 for 30/60/90-minute fire protection in solid timber joists and 30 minutes in web-joist and I-joist constructions. The fitting takes standard GU10 halogen or LED bulbs up to 50W and 60mm in length, with a twist-and-lock front ring that allows bulb changes without removing the bezel.

Designed for new-build and retrofit residential installations where Building Regulations Part B fire safety compliance is required, the downlight suits hallways, landings, bedrooms and living rooms with ceiling void access. The 72mm cut-out and spring-clip fixings accommodate ceiling thicknesses up to 30mm. The housing is insulation-compatible, allowing loft insulation to be laid over the fitting without creating a fire hazard or overheating risk.

The pressed steel and aluminium construction provides structural integrity under fire conditions while keeping the overall weight manageable for ceiling installation. The chrome finish on the bezel coordinates with modern switch plates, door furniture and bathroom fittings. The IP20 rating makes the fitting suitable for general interior use but not for bathrooms or outdoor applications. Electrical connection is via a 10A connector block within a secure back-box enclosure, supplied with a cable grip for strain relief.

Frequently Asked

What does fire-rated mean for a downlight?

Fire-rated downlights are tested to maintain the integrity of a ceiling's fire barrier when installed. This fitting is certified to BS476 Parts 21 & 23, providing 30/60/90-minute fire protection in solid timber joists and 30 minutes in web-joist and I-joist constructions. It prevents fire spreading through the ceiling void where the light is fitted.

Can this be used with LED GU10 bulbs?

Yes. The fitting accepts standard GU10 halogen or LED bulbs up to 50W and 60mm in length. Most LED GU10s are 6-8W and well within the dimensional and wattage limits. Dimming capability depends on the bulb chosen — pair with a dimmable GU10 and appropriate dimmer switch if dimming is required.

What ceiling thickness does it accommodate?

The spring-clip fixings are designed for ceiling thicknesses up to 30mm. Thicker ceilings may require additional support or alternative fixing methods. The recessed depth is 105mm, so adequate void space above the ceiling is needed.

Is it safe to cover with loft insulation?

Yes. The fitting is insulation-compatible, meaning loft insulation can be laid over the housing without creating a fire risk or causing the fitting to overheat. This is a key requirement for downlights installed in ceilings below insulated loft spaces.
