Description
The Glenbeigh is a 390mm-tall outdoor pedestal lantern with a spherical opal polycarbonate globe held in a black polymer frame consisting of two curved arms that wrap around the equator of the globe. The frame sits on a hexagonal plinth base 270mm across, giving the lantern a footprint suited to gate posts, porch plinths and garden pillars. The globe houses a single E27 bulb fitting (bulb sold separately) and the IP44 rating permits year-round outdoor use in UK weather.
Designed for driveways, garden pathways, front porches and boundary posts, the Glenbeigh provides soft ambient light through the opal diffuser, reducing glare while maintaining visibility across a 3-5m radius. The pedestal format suits post-mounted installations where wiring runs up through the base, and the hexagonal plinth can be fixed to flat surfaces or post caps using the integrated mounting points. The black polymer construction resists corrosion in coastal environments where salt spray would degrade metal finishes over time.
The opal polycarbonate globe is impact-resistant and significantly tougher than glass, making the Glenbeigh suitable for high-traffic areas, driveways where vehicles pass close by, and properties with exposed positions. The E27 socket accepts standard LED, halogen or filament bulbs up to 60W, allowing control over colour temperature and brightness depending on whether the lantern is used for decorative accent lighting or functional path lighting. The curved-arm frame design has been in continuous production since the early 2000s and pairs with both traditional brick-built properties and more modern rendered exteriors.
Elstead Lighting backs the Glenbeigh with a 20-year warranty covering material and manufacturing defects, reflecting the durability of the polymer construction. The black finish is UV-stable and does not require repainting or surface maintenance beyond occasional wiping to remove dust or salt deposits in coastal locations.

Frequently Asked
What does the IP44 rating mean for outdoor use?
IP44 means the lantern is protected against solid objects larger than 1mm (dust and small debris) and against water splashing from any direction. This makes it suitable for year-round outdoor use in UK weather, including rain and snow, but it should not be installed where it will be directly pressure-washed or submerged.
What bulb should I use?
The lantern takes a standard E27 bulb up to 60W. For outdoor path lighting, a warm-white LED between 6-10W and 2700K-3000K provides sufficient visibility without harsh glare. For decorative accent lighting, a lower-wattage amber or flame-effect LED works well.
Is the globe glass or plastic?
The globe is opal polycarbonate, not glass. Polycarbonate is significantly more impact-resistant than glass and will not shatter if struck, making it safer for driveways, high-traffic areas and properties with children or pets.
How is the lantern mounted?
The hexagonal plinth base has integrated mounting points for fixing to flat surfaces or post caps. Wiring typically runs up through the post or pillar and enters the lantern base from below. The installation requires a qualified electrician for mains wiring connection.
