Crystal sits close to the ceiling here, held in a shallow polished chrome frame that measures 50cm across each side. The face is packed with cut crystalline pieces over a mirrored backing, so the light bounces about inside the fitting before it reaches the room. The LED is built in and runs at a crisp 4000K cool white, bright and clean rather than cosy. Switched on it reads as a bright square of glitter; switched off it is a mirrored plate that picks up whatever daylight the room has.

We reach for this where a pendant would hang too low: a hallway with a modest ceiling, a landing, a bedroom over the foot of the bed, a dining corner in a flat. The square outline suits rooms with straight lines and plain door frames, and the spread is broad enough for it to be the only fitting in a medium room. Keep it to dry rooms, so hallways, bedrooms and living spaces rather than a shower room or anywhere steam gathers. It is not dimmable, so a plain switch is all it asks for.

The frame is metal in a polished chrome finish, and the crystal detail is what carries the look, so it pays to keep the face clear of dust. A soft brush or a dry microfibre cloth across the crystal now and then is enough; turn the power off at the wall before you start, and keep polishes and solvents away from the chrome, which marks easily. It carries a three year warranty.
