Description

The Finny is a 204mm square recessed downlight cast from white plaster with a central tiltable GU10 fitting. The square frame sits flush with the ceiling once plastered and painted, leaving only the adjustable inner ring visible. The GU10 bulb holder tilts within its housing, allowing the beam to be directed towards walls, furniture or architectural features rather than fixed downward.

Designed for living rooms, hallways, kitchens and bedrooms with sufficient ceiling void depth, the Finny suits larger ceiling grids where a 204mm aperture provides more coverage than standard 90-110mm downlights. The plaster construction can be painted to match the ceiling colour, making the fitting almost invisible when the light is off. Installation requires a minimum 66mm ceiling void depth plus space for the GU10 bulb and lampholder behind the plaster frame.

The white plaster body acts as a heat sink, dispersing warmth from the GU10 bulb across a larger surface area than metal downlights. This reduces localised heat build-up around the lamp fitting. The IP20 rating restricts use to dry indoor areas — the plaster is not moisture-resistant and should not be installed in bathrooms or near showers. The fitting accepts any standard GU10 bulb up to 50W (sold separately), and is compatible with most trailing-edge dimmers when paired with a dimmable GU10 LED.

Frequently Asked

What ceiling void depth is required?

A minimum 66mm void depth is needed for the plaster frame, plus approximately 50-60mm additional depth behind the frame for the GU10 lampholder and bulb depending on bulb length. Most installations require 110-130mm total void clearance.

Can the plaster frame be painted?

Yes. The white plaster can be painted with standard ceiling emulsion to match the surrounding ceiling colour. Allow the plaster to dry fully after installation before painting, and mask the inner GU10 fitting to avoid paint on the bulb holder.

Is it dimmable?

The fitting itself supports dimming when paired with a dimmable GU10 LED bulb and a compatible trailing-edge dimmer. Not all GU10 LEDs dim smoothly — check the bulb specification before installation.

Can it be used in bathrooms?

No. The IP20 rating and plaster construction mean the Finny is not suitable for bathrooms, wet rooms or other moisture-prone areas. Use a metal IP44 or IP65 rated downlight in those zones.
