The Fernhaven fabric table lamp stands 490mm tall with a 250mm fabric shade, on a brushed aged brass stem rising from white marble. It is the taller and narrower of the two Fernhaven table lamps, and the fabric shade softens the light so it reads warm and diffused rather than sharp. One E14 LED lamp at 7W sits inside, and the marble base brings the weight to 2.1kg, enough to keep it steady without being awkward to move.

The taller, slimmer shape earns its place on a bedside table, where height matters more than spread and a narrow shade keeps the light off a sleeping partner. It works just as well on a console, a desk or in a pair on a sideboard, where two narrow shades read lighter than two wide ones would. Fabric diffusion makes it a good bedroom and sitting room lamp rather than a task light. It is not dimmable, so a switched socket or a plug-in switch is the practical way to take it down to nothing at night. We would put it on a bedside table before anywhere else in the house.

The stem and fittings are metal in brushed aged brass, matt rather than polished, and the base is natural white marble, veined differently in every piece. Vacuum the fabric shade gently on a low setting with the upholstery head and keep it dry, as water marks shade fabrics. Dust the brass with a dry cloth and keep acidic cleaners away from the stone.
