Description
This F-35B Lightning stoneware mug carries a printed fact panel for the jet on one side and two detailed drawings of the aircraft on the other. The front is headed F-35B LIGHTNING in bold dark letters, with copper-coloured bands labelling the manufacturer, engine type, designer, crew, first flight, weapons payload, length, wingspan and top speed, and a small silhouette of the jet sits above the wingspan figure. Turn it round and the aircraft is drawn in grey from above and from the side, with roundels on its wings. The body is white, the inside and the handle are black, and it holds 11oz, a generous everyday size for tea or coffee.
At 10cm tall, 12cm wide and 8.2cm deep, it sits comfortably on a desk, a workshop bench or the kitchen table, and it is just as at home on a study shelf between uses. The fact panel is easy to read at arm's length, so it tends to start a conversation over a morning cup: a crew of one, a first flight on 15 December 2006, and the rest of the jet's figures set out in tidy rows. We think it makes a thoughtful Father's Day gift, the kind of present that earns a place in the cupboard and comes out every day rather than sitting in a drawer.
The mug is made from stoneware, a dense kind of ceramic, with a smooth glossy finish outside and in. The handle is a full open loop with room for your fingers, and the black inside gives the white body a crisp two-tone look. As general good practice for a printed mug, we suggest washing it by hand in warm soapy water and drying it with a soft cloth to keep the print sharp. For a ready-made present, tuck a bag of good coffee or a box of favourite tea inside before you wrap it.
