Eaton 4 Light E14 Semi Flush Ceiling Light 42cm - Polished Chrome

Four clear glass shades sit close beneath the ceiling on a polished chrome frame, spreading light outwards rather than dropping it into the room below. Each shade takes a small candle lamp on an E14 socket, and because the glass is clear the lamp is part of the look, so a flame tip or plain candle shape suits it far better than a stubby golf ball. The body measures 42cm across, wide enough to read as a proper centre light without the drop of a pendant. Dimming is possible where dimmable lamps are fitted and a suitable dimmer is used.

We reach for this in rooms where a pendant would hang too low or feel too weighty: hallways and landings, a bedroom with an ordinary ceiling height, a snug, or above a small dining table in a cottage room. The lamps give a soft ambient wash across the ceiling rather than a directed beam, so it works as the main light with a table lamp or two doing the closer reading work. We stock it in polished chrome and in antique brass, and the same shape is made in a smaller three light version where a room asks for less.

It is glass and metal throughout, the chrome polished to a bright mirror sheen that shows fingerprints as readily as it shows reflections. Keep a dry microfibre cloth to hand for the frame, and wash the glass only once it is cold, drying it fully before the power goes back on; nothing abrasive and no solvent near the plating. It carries a one year warranty. The wider range runs from wall lights and table lamps through to larger pendants in the same clear glass and bright metal, so a hall and the room it opens into can be matched without repeating the same fitting. Lamps are not included.

What lamps does it take, and how many?

It takes four E14 candle lamps, up to 20W each. LED candles in C35 or flame tip form are the ones we would choose, as the clear glass leaves the lamp on view.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you fit dimmable lamps and use a dimmer suited to them. No dimmer is supplied with the fitting.

How much room does it need below the ceiling?

The overall height is 330mm, with the body itself at 275mm, and it measures 420mm in diameter. It sits close to the ceiling rather than hanging on a rod or chain.

How should the glass be cleaned?

Switch off at the wall and let everything cool, then wipe the glass with a soft damp cloth and dry it straight away. Avoid abrasive creams and solvents, which will dull the chrome plating.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20, which means dry rooms only, so keep it to hallways, bedrooms, landings and living spaces.
