A blanking plate does one job and does it quietly: it covers a position on the wall that is no longer in use, so what is left reads as part of the wall rather than as unfinished work. This one is finished in matt black, with a flat unbroken face and no screw heads on show to catch the light, and it is moulded in polycarbonate. The two gang size follows a standard double plate, so it lines up with the switches and sockets sitting either side of it.

It earns its keep during a rewire or a redecoration, when a socket has been taken out of service, an old television point has gone redundant, or a kitchen refit leaves a position stranded behind new units. We reach for one in hallways and sitting rooms where a bare aperture would be the first thing the eye lands on, and in offices and let properties where the tidiest answer is also the cheapest. Treat it as a dry room fitting, so not bathroom zones and nothing outdoors. It carries a ten year warranty.
