Description
This tractor mantel clock puts the time in the cab of a little green farm tractor, finished in a distressed vintage style that looks as though it has seen a few seasons in the yard. The clock face sits where the cab window would be: a pale square dial with bold black numbers, a fine minute track and slim black hands meeting at a gold centre. We love the detail around it. There is a tall exhaust stack with a red cap, small red knobs on the bonnet, a mesh grille with two round headlamps at the front, a mesh side window, a ridged roof and a little red ladder step up to the cab. Big black rear tyres and smaller front wheels carry silver spoked hubs. It stands 21cm high, 26cm across and 11cm deep.
On a mantelpiece, a bookshelf, a sideboard or a desk, its bold numbers are easy to read at a glance. The deep green and worn edges sit happily in a farmhouse kitchen, a country sitting room or a study with a rustic feel, and it brings some good humour to a home office shelf. As a housewarming present it makes a thoughtful choice for a new home, giving the room a useful clock and a talking point at once.
It runs on one AA battery, so there is no cable to hide and it can sit wherever there is a flat, level surface. The distressed finish is part of the design: the scuffed edges and worn patches are meant to be there. To keep it looking its best, dust it with a soft dry cloth and keep water and polish away from the finish. For a gift, a ribbon tied around the cab is all it needs, and on the mantel it looks right at home beside a stack of books or a pair of candlesticks.
