Description

Big, round and warm as candlelight, this is a lamp made to be looked at rather than tucked inside a shade. The globe measures 30cm across, amber tinted all over, so what you see when it is lit is a soft gold glow with very little glare. It draws just 8W, and at 1800K the colour sits right at the bottom of warm white, where light turns almost orange. The cap is an E40, the oversized screw fitting used on large decorative lamps.

It is the sort of lamp we reach for when the fitting is little more than a cord and a cap, and the bulb has to carry the whole look. It suits bars, cafés, hallways and stairwells, and it earns its place at home too, hanging low over a dining table or a kitchen island. It is dimmable, so long as a compatible dimmer is used; no dimmer comes with it. Wound down, the amber deepens and the room goes very quiet. Anyone after bright working light should look elsewhere, because the job here is atmosphere.

The sphere is evenly toned from crown to neck, tapering down to the screw cap, and the amber runs right across it. It is a substantial lamp, so hold it steady when handling it. Cleaning wants nothing more than a dry cloth over a cold lamp, with the power off first; solvents and damp cloths do the tint no favours. It carries a three year warranty. We would use it where a single big glowing ball is enough on its own, or in a row at staggered heights over a long table, which is how the shape looks best.

Frequently Asked

What cap does it take?

It has an E40 cap, the large screw fitting used on oversized decorative lamps, so the holder needs to be E40 rather than the more common E27.

How large is the globe?

The sphere is 300mm in diameter and the lamp stands 430mm tall overall, including the neck and cap.

How bright is it, and what does the light look like?

It gives 630 lumens from 8W at 1800K, an extra warm amber closer to candle or firelight than to ordinary warm white. It is decorative light rather than task light.

Can I dim it?

Yes, on a dimmer suited to LED lamps. A dimmer is not included, and using an incompatible one can cause flicker or buzz.

How should I clean it?

Switch off, let it cool completely, then dust with a dry soft cloth. Keep water, solvents and sprays away from the cap and contacts.

How long should it last?

Average life is rated at 25,000 hours, and it carries a three year warranty.
