Description

The Chord DI-P1 is a passive direct injection box, or DI box, that converts high impedance instrument outputs to low impedance line signals. That lets you feed an instrument directly into a mixing console without the level and impedance mismatch you would otherwise get. It takes an unbalanced 6.3mm jack input and gives you a balanced XLR male output for the console, plus a 6.3mm jack through output so you can still send the signal on to an amplifier.

Input impedance sits above 100k Ohms with an output impedance of 600 Ohms, so it works well with guitars, basses and keyboards. Three pad settings at 0, -20 and -40dBu handle level matching, which is useful when you are dealing with hot signals from active pickups or line level sources. The ground handling gives you two options: a ground float setting with an RF and mains filter for ground lift, and a ground lift setting that isolates the signal ground without the filter. This helps you deal with hum and buzz caused by ground loops between the stage and the desk.

Being passive, the DI-P1 needs no phantom power or batteries, so there is one less thing to worry about on stage. It measures 86 x 70 x 45mm and weighs 234g, small enough to sit by your feet or tuck into a gig bag. The controls are laid out simply with the pad and Ground-Float-Lift switch on the unit, so you can set it and forget it during a set.

Frequently Asked

What is a passive DI box used for?

It converts a high impedance instrument output to a low impedance balanced signal, so you can plug an instrument straight into a mixing console over a long cable run without noise or signal loss.

Does the DI-P1 need power or batteries?

No. It is a passive DI box, so it draws no phantom power or batteries. Just connect it between your instrument and the console.

What do the three pad settings do?

They set the input level at 0, -20 or -40dBu. Use them to match hot signals, such as active pickups or line level sources, to the console without overloading it.

What is the difference between the ground float and ground lift options?

Ground float applies an RF and mains filter while lifting the ground. Ground lift isolates the signal ground without the filter. Both help remove hum caused by ground loops.

Can I still connect to my amplifier?

Yes. The 6.3mm jack through output passes the signal on, so you can send it to an amplifier while the XLR feeds the console.

What connectors does it use?

The input is a 6.3mm jack (unbalanced). Outputs are a balanced XLR male and a 6.3mm jack through (unbalanced).
