Description

The Chord BOM-40 is a compact acoustic four-string bass with a short-scale neck and an OM-style body. The shorter scale and smaller body make it easy to hold and play, whether you're practising at home, playing unplugged sets or taking it away with you. At just over 2kg and around a metre in length, it fits into spaces where a full-size bass would be awkward.

A laminated spruce top sits over laminated mahogany back and sides. The spruce lets the brightness of the strings come through, while the mahogany fills out the low end for a rounded, full-bodied tone. The set neck is made from okoume with an HPL composite fingerboard and bridge, and the nut measures 43mm across. Hardware includes an ABS saddle, nut and bridge pins, with chrome die-cast tuning machine heads in a two-a-side layout. ABS binding tidies the edges and the whole guitar carries a matt natural finish.

When you want to plug in, the BOM-40 has an under-saddle piezo pickup feeding a 3-band active EQ with a built-in tuner. Controls cover volume, phase and the three EQ bands, and the system runs on a supplied 9V battery. It's a straightforward setup that suits stage, rehearsal and quiet practice alike. The playability and sound quality hold up for experienced players, so it works as a first bass, a travel bass or a useful second instrument to keep to hand.

Frequently Asked

What scale length does the BOM-40 use?

It's a short-scale bass, which means a shorter neck and reduced string tension. That makes it more comfortable to play than a standard long-scale bass, particularly for smaller hands or players moving over from guitar.

Can I plug it into an amp?

Yes. An under-saddle piezo pickup feeds a 3-band active EQ with a built-in tuner, so you can plug straight into an amp or PA. It runs on a 9V battery, which is supplied.

What controls are on the preamp?

You get a 3-band EQ, volume, a phase switch and an onboard tuner. The phase control helps reduce feedback when you're playing loud or close to an amp.

Is this a good size for travel?

It is. The compact OM-style body measures 1035 x 405 x 130mm and the whole bass weighs 2.13kg, so it's easy to carry and store compared with a full-size bass.

What woods is it made from?

The top is laminated spruce, with laminated mahogany back and sides. The set neck is okoume and the fingerboard and bridge are HPL composite.

Does it come with a tuner?

Yes, a tuner is built into the active EQ system, so you can tune up without a separate device.
